Wind Sculpture, Fundación César Manrique, Tahiche

The kids pointing out one of César Manrique's eye-catching wind sculptures. The entire island of Lanzarote is littered in these brightly-coloured and unique creations. You'll find them mostly along the island's roundabouts - nodding, bobbing and twirling in the notoriously high winds that Lanzarote attracts!

Cherub and Skull Gravestone

Gravestone with cherub and skull

Another photo from the crypt at St Martin In The Fields - this one's an ornate gravestone from 1670. I love these things, as morbid as they are - cherub at the top and a sinister skull at the bottom. They really don't make them like this anymore.

Henry Croft - The Original Pearly King

An eyecatching memorial in the St Martin In The Fields Crypt is this statue in honour of Henry Croft. If you read the inscription on the base, it says The Original Pearly King.

Skull & Crossbones on a gravestone

Skull and crossbones

This'll be the first photo post from our trip to London last week. Lisa and I found ourselves with a bit of time before our flight home, and we wandered into the crypt at St Martin In The Fields (just beside Trafalgar Square).

Women Of World War II monument, London

Women Of World War II monument, London

In 2005, Queen Elizabeth II unveiled this sculpture by John W Mills dedicated to the effort of women in the second World War. The sculpture stands in Whitehall in London north of the Cenotaph.

The lettering on the sides replicates the typeface used on war time ration books. There are 17 individual sets of clothing and uniforms around the sides, symbolising the hundreds of different jobs women undertook in World War II and then gave back for the homecoming men at the end of the war.
